In 1944, the U.S. was embroiled in war in Europe and in the Pacific. Back home, folks were going to the movie theater to bolster spirits. Some movies looked directly into the face of war, while others helped people escape for just a couple of hours.
Going My Way with Bing Crosby was the top-grossing movie of the year, but it was followed closely by a film that marked the first-time collaboration of director Vincente Minnelli and MGM leading lady, Judy Garland (who would be married to one another the following year).
Meet Me In St. Louis gave Judy two of her signature songs, and in this week's Flicks in Five, The Boston Pops plays one of them, "The Trolley Song".
Fans of Saturday Night Live, particularly those who were watching the program in the late 1980s and early 1990s, will remember this song as part of the signature medley sung by the Sweeney Sisters, an over-eager pair of hotel-lounge entertainers played by Nora Dunn and the late Jan Hooks.
