It started as a "pop" song by Irving Berlin that Bing Crosby debuted on his radio program at Christmastime 1941. By 1942 it was incorporated in a movie, Holiday Inn, but didn't get much notice until late in 1943 when the servicemen and women stationed around the world requested it to the top of the charts.
