Sondheim was the reigning king of musicals. With witty, erudite lyrics and gorgeous soaring scores, he had hit after hit on Broadway with Follies, Company, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, and numerous others.

There were also some under the radar imports like Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables that enjoyed success in NY theaters.
